General Game Instructions

Euchre is a 4 player trick taking game played in pairs.
It is played with regular playing card deck, but with all cards from 2 to 8 removed.
Each player is dealt 5 cards.
The cards of each suit are ranked A-K-Q-J-10-9, with the exception of the trump suit, explained below.

The game is played in 2 phases: trump suit bid and play.

An alternative 3 player version is offered on this site.

4-player version:

Trump suit bid:
Each player has a choice of whether to make the order card's suit the trump suit. Such a bid demands that the bidding partnership win at least 3 of 5 tricks.
If a player makes that bid, the dealer will receive the order card after discarding another card in her/his hand
If no player wants the order card's suit, then each player is offered the chance to select another trump suit
A player may elect to play without their partner for a game, for the possibility of winning all 5 tricks and thus receiving 4 points.
Once a bid is made (and the trump suit is selected), the game enters the play phase.
Note that the trump suit will include the Jack of the matching colour's suit, and the two Jacks will rank #1 and #2 among the trump cards.
For example, if spades is selected, the trump suit is ranked as follows: J-spades, J-clubs, A-spades, K-spades, Q-spades, 10-spades, 9-spades. All other suits are ranked A-9, however the clubs' suit will not include the J-clubs, as this is now the #2 ranking trump card.

The play:
The lead player of the first round is clockwise of the dealer.
Each subsequent lead is determined by the winning card of each hand
All played cards must match the suit of the lead card, unless a player does not have cards of that suit, in which case any card may be played, including a trump card.
The winning card must be trump suited or the same suit as the lead card.
All trump suited cards are of higher rank than any other suit.

End game:
The partnership that selected the bid will receive 1 point if they collectively win 3 or 4 tricks; 2 points if they collectively win all 5 tricks.
If one person in the partnership elected to 'go alone' and won all 5 tricks, then the partnership will receive 4 points.
If the partnership does not win at least 3 tricks, then the other 2 players will receive at least 2 points.

3-player version:

The 3 player version resembles the 4 player version with a few distinctions:
1. Whomever selects the bid must go alone; though a partnership is replaced by allowing the bidder to pick from the kitty. The bidder may choose to 'go alone' and not draw from the kitty.
2. The bidder must win at least 3 tricks in order to receive points.
3. If the 2 non-bidding players win 3 or more tricks, they will each receive at least 2 points.
